In Europe, the consumption of insects or use as feed for livestock is not yet common. A public debate starts here but - due to the postulated efficient production facility, and the favorable nutrient composition of insects. Currently the majority of the world consumed insects nature is taken, the use of insects as food or feed, however, an industrial breeding is sought under controlled conditions. Overall, considerable research is in the field of technological preparation and processing steps, in particular, but also with regard to safety aspects and as regards the risk perception of the population.
BfR Symposium "Insects as food and feed - Food for the Future" of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment is the current state of knowledge on market relevance and regulatory aspects, nutrients and ingredients, the preparation of food and feed from insects, but also potential health risks and public acceptance gather.
